Watauga June Scores
The rain cleared and we had a great day for shooting. For all the shooters in the low lands, I think we reached a high of 77 and with the wind it felt like 72.
We even had low Landers setting around with pull-over’s on between matches. And yes the mountain wind was there all day long, but the targets flew very good and straight.
Now for the shooting, in singles we had George (BamBam) Sudderth sprinkling sudder-dust over the fields, taking champ with a 99. And that was after missing the first bird out of the house. Then in Handicap we had a new shooter roll in with his new Kolar with less than 200 rounds through it, Mr. Grainger Pierce out of Gastonia came in the house with a 93 and took the money and 1/2 yard punch back down the mountain. Some really good shooting in what most would call a brisk wind. Doubles were led by you know who BamBam George Sudderth with a 95, Morgan tried to hold on but weakened in the final fifty and found himself down by four.
Spy vs.Spy
Well it looked like Spy 2 (Tom Shelley) came to the range with but one thing on his mind and that was to top Spy100 (yours truly). After a cold start on the first fifty in singles, Spy 2 moves to field two and posted a 50 straight and heads to the clubhouse knowing that was win number one. Only to find out that Spy100 had matched up and by posting a 49 was able to hold a one target lead in singles. Then Spy2 brought out the big guns Hot Dog and Watermelon, the one real down fall for Spy100. Going to the line weighted down with hotdogs and watermelon, Spy 2 was able to pull a two target lead over the suffering bloated Spy100 in handicap. Well that gives Spy2 a one target lead going to the final event doubles. As they take the line in the first squad out side by side, the targets are flying and powder a burning. First fifty down and things seemed to be really tight as Spy100 turns around only to see someone from the other field run up shouting something about seeing a chip. A "CHIP" he was over sixty yards away and he's spotting chips. Ok! now we take the line for the second fifty Spy2 is up one bird in doubles and two for overall. Second fifty was heated with the wind pushing targets down, and Spy2"s ability to shoot the targets as they flew off the arm was really making it hard on ole Spy100. But it was close and as we all knows it’s not over until the fat lady sings. Well last pair out and as Spy100 turns for the score he hears the scorer "Morgan one eye" speaking of yet other "Chips", chips so small that you couldn't find them on the hood of a metal flake Hotrod. Well Spy2 takes the win by four and then all the points to the house by five. But not happy with his win he still tries to play another trump card, when he comes dancing through the club house with his pet banker who claims they counted not five birds but seven birds. Now as all things wind down and Spy2 is out the gate with a wide grin and pocket full of points. Spy100 is standing there with the man who earlier could see fleas making love at 100 yards, complain that he needed to go back to the eye doctor because he's blind in one eye and can’t see out of the other. Guess this will have to carry over to the ZONE so stay tuned.
