January 8th, 2011 - Lewis Class Fun Shoot At The Rock

Lane Murray led all shooters today at the January 8th Lewis Class Fun Shoot at the Rockingham Gun Club. Several shooters posted 46’s in the singles but handicap is where the rubber met the road.

With the temps in the low 30’s and the winds in the low 20’s it made for some interesting shooting to say the least. With clouds floating by it made seeing the birds a little bit tricky also.

We attracted the local trap crew but also had a couple of skeeters fall over to the dark side for the event. Leo Weber hung right in there and had the 3rd highest score amongst 9 other entries. Mike Holt maximized the difficulty in breaking a target by using a 20 gauge to shoot the hard to hit targets.

All in all it was a great day at the Rock and Elmo came out for a spot of soup. Glenn Brewer gave us a flying demo before the shooting started and had better sense than to break out the “Splinter”.

Thanks to Leo, Big Dave and JT for scoring and loading and to Lane and Tom for making the Lewis Class Shoot run so smoothly. We started right at 10:30 and we were done at 12:30 +/-.

As I stated at the top of the article Lane Murray won the event with a 46/43 = 89 and Lucky Lew Wyatt hit the remaining Lewis with a stellar 41/30 = 71. Lewis won just as much as the big man at the top and he is smiling all the way to the cookie jar.

The drawing for door prizes provided several folks with some goodies and I wound up winning a can of “Breakfree CLP”.

Next weekend the Rockingham Gun Club will be holding their first registered shoot of the 2011 season. Hopefully we will have good weather and will run “4” traps for handicap with the “Middle 50” pot at or above $2100 bucks.

Have a great weekend and please join us at the Rock for some of the best trap targets in the Southeast.
