Sunny skies and hot humid weather was the word of the day at the 3rd Annual Elmo Matkins Classic trapshoot. There was minimal wind and the sun popped in and out of the clouds all day. Targets were good and scores were good also.

There were only two 98’s broken in the first 100 and they included Scott Hanes and Ted Carwile. There were four 96’s and three 95’s prior to the start of the 2nd 100. The second 100 is when things began to get going. There were two 99’s that included Tommy Brown and Charley Rinehart and they were on the same squad. Two 98’s that included VA shooters Ted Carwile and John Dumas and they were on the same squad. Last but not least the lone 100 was broken by the man on squad 5 post 5. Craig Dunn after an impressive 99 last week at the Buckhorn GC broke his first 100 at the Rock. You might recognize him as the fellow that shoots the new Beretta ugb25 xcel.

Handicap found seven shooters with scores in the 90’s and five 25’s were broken that included Ronnie Manuel, Winky Mabe, Tom Brown, Don Kaufman and Chris Shoulars. The long yarder Tom Brown out shot the field and had a chance to break a 96 but let two slide to the bank on the last trap for a 94.

The “Elmo” perpetual trophy was based on 200 singles and the 100 handicap this year. The competition was fierce with the top 6 shooters only separated by “6” targets. Tom Brown broke 194 in the singles and a 94 from the 27 to secure his place on the “Elmo”. John Domas was only a target off with a 287 with Scott Hanes at 285 and at 284 Charley Rinehart and Ted Carwile.

We sure hope everybody had a great time that attended and we appreciate you for shooting at the Rock. Thanks to the folks that worked and helped prepare the delicious lunch and Marty thanks for the ice cream. I don’t know who all brought the goodies but I do know Lee Ann brought the peach cobbler.
