For those of you that must work out in this heat we are praying for you. Another few days of hot weather and mid 80’s toward the end of the week and even lower over the weekend.
No local shoots to report on and Watauga had to cancel their Tom Pitts Memorial shoot due to some mechanical and electrical issues. The plan is to combine the Tom and the Glenn for their 2-day shoot in August.
The Buckhorn Gun Club will host a two-day shooting event this weekend. August 2nd & 3rd the program will probably be 100 singles, 100 handicap and 50 pair of doubles each day. The weather looks much cooler and drier with a slight breeze in the Mebane area. Use http://www.nctrap.com for club directions.
If I am not mistaken Brushy Mountain VA shoots Saturday and Triangle in Bluefield VA shoots Sunday. High temp for Hurt VA is 77 degrees Saturday and that will feel great!
Jeff Galloway arrived back in Greensboro about 9:30 Sunday night. He drove his dad up to the Grand over the weekend and flew back. They rent a home there in Sparta and Hunter will begin ATA meetings beginning on Monday at 5PM. The EC will meet every morning during the Grand beginning at 8AM. Jeff will fly back up to St. Louis Friday for the rest of Grand week and they will drive back Sunday.
Former ATA president Terry Roush left Sunday for the Grand in his motor home. Not sure if Terry will shoot or not but I know he will have a great time. Others attending will be NCTA Prez Marty Hill and Allan Davis. Mark Cox will slip up to Illinois without his compadre Tim Davis and Colson Allen will make the trip with the folks. If I am not mistaken Isaac McCoy will make the trip and not sure who is hauling him up there. I am pretty certain the Mathis brothers will be attending as good as they are shooting. I am sure there are more NC shooters attending and we will be checking as the info becomes available. I really wanted to make it again this year but have a funeral next Saturday and my 2-year-old great grandsons birthday Sunday……
I took the 4Runner to have my oil changed and had some time to make some phone calls. I called Charlie Keiger to catch up and he had just returned from a trip and had to cut it short due to illness. He had respiratory issues, and he decided he needed to get back home to get better. His daughter Elizabeth use to shoot back in the day and shot rather well I might say. She has a 10-year-old daughter, and I am going to send Charlie some pictures of Elizabeth shooting to prove to his granddaughter that her mom can handle a Kolar.
You never know what you will find on the internet and this week I read an article about a settlement regarding death due to asbestos in shotgun shells. That is correct – Remington Peters way back in the day used asbestos in their paper shotgun shells. The boxes were clearly marked with the DuPont logo along with Remington Peters. The gentleman had claimed that he developed health issues after using these asbestos laden cartridges. You can Google the info for more specific info on the timeline. These shells were green paper shells and on some of the boxes it had the word asbestos on the box. None of the other shell manufacturers used asbestos in their shells. This process was phased out after plastic shells started to be made. I loaded Winchester Western papers back in the mid 60’s and Federal papers but never any of the green Remington Peters.
The AIM Grand is first with the Preliminary Grand starting on Wednesday. You can keep up with the scores by using this link for the Grand slideshow. I usually have a tablet running the entire time just to see our NC shooters on the leaderboard. Here is the link or you can got to the www.shootata.com website to access the link.
If you are in the Myrtle Beach area this weekend the Wildlife Action Gun Club in Aynor SC will host a 300-target event Saturday August, the 2nd. 81 degrees with a 50% chance of rain so it will be cooler and wetter for the event. Dave Daily is the Vice President of the club, and they have a great place to shoot in the Palmetto State.
Be sure to check out Dan Johnson’s last installment of his Wyoming trip which was very interesting! I enjoy road trips, and I helped drive to Guatemala back in the old college days when I climbed a volcano in Mexico. JC and I rode to Odessa, Vandalia and Sparta and it was always fun regardless of how far it was.
That is going to do it for this week. Pray for cooler weather and please stay hydrated when out in these hot conditions. Hello to Scott, Ronnie, Cowboy, Tim, Bobby, Phil, Mac, John, Art, Barron, Mark C, Mark S, Dan, John W, Thea and Anne and until next week……smokem
