July 14th Smoke Report
July 14th Smoke Report
Hopefully you are enjoying this rain or maybe you are not? Between the heat and the rain and the bugs I am looking forward to cooler weather. One trap shooting event over the weekend and three shoots this week.
Durham County Wildlife Club shot Saturday and from what I heard it was hot. 22 entries for the singles and there were four 96’s with the winner Dan Johnson. Three 92’s in the handicap with Robert Roesch the winner and a half yard punch with 17 entries. 10 shooters for doubles with Dan Johnson the winner with a 92. DCWC shoots next on my 70th birthday August 16th.
The West Virginia State Shoot cranked up last week and from what I can tell it was well attended. We had one NC shooter at Winchester, and he arrived to shoot the entire program. Some folks never break a 200 straight in singles but JR shooter Isaac McCoy marked that off his list Saturday. I was in PA when he called and when I noticed his name come up, I told Dave Daily “he broke a 200 straight”. I answered the phone and said you broke 200 didn’t you and he said yes sir I did. I asked “are you in a shootoff and he said no I won open hi-gun outright. He won other trophies prior to that during the week but hey what can I say other that congratulations!!
Three shooting events this week with Buckhorn hosting a BIG50 on Wednesday. The weather looks good and winds light and variable. The question is whether Cayson Clayton and Dan Johnson will win all the events. If someone could shoot me the scores from the event it would be appreciated.
Saturday the Rockingham County Gun Club will host a BIG50 with registration at 8:30 with shooting to begin as soon as squads are formed. Looks like 90 for a high temp and we want to get done before the popup showers start.
Sunday the Old Hickory Gun Club will host a typical 300 target program, and they always provide a great lunch. The weather looks like 93 degrees with winds 5-10 an 50% chance of rain. Of course this is a typical forecast for this time of year.
I traveled to Pennsylvania last Wednesday for my annual Konne-Yaut Indian shoot. I rolled out at 5AM and was sitting at the Ruffsdale Gun Club at noon. 400 miles with a 30-minute stop for food and gas. I put my 10x10 up and took a few pictures and said hello to gun club manager Jim Lambert. I drove to West Penn Sportsman’s Club near Delmont PA for a round of sporting clays. There were 6 of us and the fellow that planned and supervised construction of the course. He helped us navigate the course and I somehow managed the third highest score shooting my A400. We left and went back to Dave Dailys brothers house for some Sicilian pizza and fellowship. The shoot offered 900 targets over 4 days of competition. Thursday and Friday were typical 300 target days with Saturday 100 doubles and 100 handicap. Sunday the memorial service, two man shoot and 100 singles. It was hot and humid, and I was blamed for bringing the humidity from down South. We return to Ruffsdale in 2026 then to West Penn for two years, and then to Bradford for two years. While in PA I got a call from Ronnie Manuel and it had been a while since we talked. The last time we talked about getting him a stable scooter to shoot trap from. A friend of his made a vehicle available and hopefully we will see Ronnie back on the line real soon. If you have his cell, please give him a ring and some encouragement.
That will do it for this week, and I have a lot more that I will try to cobble together for next week. Hello to Scott, Ronnie, Cowboy, Tim, Bobby, Phil, Mac, John, Art, Barron, Mark C, Mark S, Dan, John W, Thea and Anne and until next week……smokem
