June 16th Smoke Report
Only 1 North Carolina shooter at the TN state shoot and a few familiar names showed up including Jesse Burgher from Alabama, Kevin Polson from Kentucky and glad to see Robert Dyer shooting well. Four 200’s in the singles, one 100 in the doubles and a 98 from a GA Lady1 won open hi-gun caps. It looks like they had great weather down on the Cumberland River. Go to www.shootscoreboard.com for all the score info.
Three shooting events this week with a BIG50 Wednesday at the Buckhorn Gun Club. The weather looks warm 94 with winds 10-15 so it might be a little sporty. Saturday the Rockingham Gun Club will host a 300-target program with a $1600+ middle 50 pot that has been sitting around for a long time. Sunday RCGC will host a BIG50 with registration at 1 and shooting will begin at 2.
The May shoot at RCGC was a 300-target program initially and it was changed to a BIG50 for the youth shoot. When the calendar was changed at www.rcgc.club it changed all the shoots to BIG50 events. Thanks to the sharp eye of Dan Johnson and Chris Powell, we got it fixed.
Brushy Mountain VA shot Saturday, and it was hot according to reliable sources. The program initially was 200 singles and 50 pairs of doubles that changed to 100 handicaps. Doug “Taco” Mojo was there along with Lane Murray. Lane had the high score in the handicap with a 90 and I am not sure about the top scores in the singles. Brushy Mountain shoots the first Saturday of each month unless there is a conflict with other events.
I usually give the former trapshooter Jim Daughteridge a call when I travel down 85 to the NC Homegrounds. The last time I called him he was gearing up for Myrtle Beach bike week on his Harley. I called him on the way to the NC State Shoot, and he gave me a call later last week. He said the bike rally was good but wetter than usual. We talked about folks we knew that have passed and I mentioned I ran into Dean Egert that used to shoot more and shot at Gastonia Parks & Rec.. Jim said he might ride up to the Dixie this fall and catch up with some of the folks.
If you are planning to go to the Virginia State Shoot you can go to www.scoresr.com to pre-register and it is FREE. I believe Mike Jeter has got it set up and he advised me that you can pre-register for the WVA State Shoot at the VA event.
I am about a month away from my trip to participate in the Konne-Yaut Indian shoot. I shot with JC Nunn at the Ruffs Dale Gun Club in 2013 and 2014. JC turned 91 at Ruffs Dale in 2014 and broke a 90 in the handicap on Sunday. Unfortunately, that was his last 100 registered targets before he passed in early November. We then moved to West Penn Sportsman and then Bradford. In 2019 I had a visit to the hospital in Forest City during the NC State Shoot and decided not to travel to Ruffs Dale just to be safe. With COVID in full swing the 2020 event was cancelled and 4 more years until a return this year to Ruffs Dale. I dropped by the club on my way home from West Penn and they painted the traphouses just like they do at the Tucson Arizona Gun Club. Jim Lambert has always been a gracious host and has ties to North Carolina. I hope the weather cooperates because I remember it being wet one year.
In 2013 at Ruffs Dale JC was shooting great and was in two different handicap shoot offs. One was against a fellow who has also passed, and it was a classic. I was filming the shoot off and JC was down two birds fast. I decided to stick around to see what happened. JC flipped the script on Harry and as soon as Harry shot his bird JC’s gun was up and a bird in the air. Harry didn’t even have the shell out of his gun, and it was his turn to shoot. JC wound up winning that shoot off and another against two shooters. He was 90 shooting a 40+ year old Beretta AL2 with electrical tape on the stock. I sure miss old JC he was one of a kind and a WWII vet.
Oh, I almost forgot that Dan Johnson has posted another one of his Tall Tales & True Stories. You just don’t know what he is going to whip out next.
I hope everyone has a great week and get out and shoot if you can stand the heat. Hello to Scott, Ronnie, Cowboy, Tim, Bobby, Phil, Mac, John, Art, Barron, Mark C, Mark S, Dan, John W, Thea and Anne and until next week……smokem
