May 26th Smoke Report
May 26th Smoke Report
Several shooting events over the weekend including Watauga and Old Hickory at Rocky Mount. It was a great weather weekend and a little bit cooler in the mountains. Watauga returned to shooting after trying to recover from the damage due to hurricane Helene.
Morgan Shaw was excited to report that Watauga was back to shooting with 24 shooters with cool temps. Benji Hight from Oxford came up to shoot and Morg remembers him from the Mike Bryant days and junior shooting. Now Benji has his son out shooting trap.
Shawn Reese was the top shooter with a 99, Lee Perry won the handicap with a 93 and the doubles with a 90. Shawn Reese took the HOA with 279. Right now, the only thing working in the clubhouse is the bathrooms. The office and kitchen are bare, and the paneling is gone. It will be a process to get everything back to normal, but progress is being made. Their next registered shoot is June 28th.
Old Hickory at Rocky Mount shot Saturday and it was well attended. They had 21 shooters with Karole Miller winning the singles (97), Chuck Woody winning the handicap (93 +1/2 yard) and Eric Blakeney winning the doubles (89) and the HOA (260). Their next shooting event is July 20th.
Buckhorn will host a BIG50 this Wednesday the 28th. It’s always fun to shoot during the week and thanks BGC for making the effort to make these events happen. Right now, the weather is looking a little wet but what does the weatherman know?
The North Carolina State Shoot is just a week away and wouldn’t it be nice to have some of this cooler weather at Bostic? I am not sure how many shooters have already classified, and I have checked out the https://www.sosclays.com/services/presquad website and it is interesting. You have a basic profile and the premium profile that I believe is $60 per year.
Dan Johnson is back from PA and has penned another story in Tall Tales & True Stories. We discussed some future story topics, and you just don’t know what he will come up with next.
Talking about stories, I chatted with Horace Best last week and somehow, we got on the subject of now deceased Earl Scripture. No matter what you think about Earl he was quite a shooter and was a larger than life character. He told me a story about Earl at the Pinehurst Gun Club many years ago. Pinehurst was known for putting on the feed bag at the shoots and Earl was known to wear a black leather vest and a big black hat. Horace said he witnessed Earl watching a shootoff and all of a sudden he pulled a fried chicken leg out of the pocket in his vest and commenced to eat it. Earl scored in South Carolina and North Carolina before finally moving to the coast. His wife Belinda lives in Florida and works in the office at the Silver Dollar Gun Club.
As I mentioned in a previous smoke report, the NC State Shoot will honor my grandfather Jim Brown with the Wednesday handicap event. I plan to ride up Wednesday and shoot that event and take a picture or two of the trophies that will be given away to the various winners. My grandfather was an early NCTA president and there are some NC shooters that still have and use reloaders he sold them 40 plus years ago. He squad hustled at the Pinehurst Gun Club and ran trap shoots at the Buckhorn Gun Club in the 70’s. Always known for wearing Bermuda shorts 365 days a year he had a signature knee tan due to wearing tall socks. Hopefully I can make it up for the event.
Caleb Mathis is at the Delaware State Shoot that is being held at the Pine Belt Sportsman Club in Shamong New Jersey. The shoot started on Thursday with Championship Singles on Sunday and the Championship doubles and handicap on Memorial Day Monday. The weather was tough right off the bat Thursday with wind and rain and just strong wind on Friday. Saturday the weather was better with a lone 199 posted by Junior Gold PA shooter Brandon Hood. Caleb won several JrGold trophies Thursday and third in class handicap Friday after a shoot off and a singles carryover for JrGold. Hopefully he will dial it in Monday with better weather conditions.
That is going to do it for this week. Enjoy a day off and take some time to spend with the family or load shells or go practice. Hello to Scott, Ronnie, Cowboy, Tim, Bobby, Phil, Mac, John, Art, Barron, Mark C, Mark S, Kolar Dan, Thea and Anne and until next week……….smokem
