November is just about here, and cooler temps have arrived in North Carolina. With temps near freezing in the NC mountains the forecast for possible wintry precip looms later in the week.
Couple of three shooting events over the weekend including Watauga, Rockingham and Buckhorn. This week look for Old Hickory on Sunday the 2nd and a BIG50 at CCLEOA on the 7th.
I took a ride up to Boone Saturday for the Watauga Gun Club Annual Chicken Wing Fling. Temps were frosty and cool early on, and 29 entries stepped to the line for the singles. Cody Lyon emerged as the winner with the lone 99 with Greg Robinson close 2nd with a 98.
Then they broke for lunch and man what a lunch. Chicken wings prepared by John Waters with slaw, chips, baked beans and some well I will explain that more very soon. Everyone took a moment to eat and fellowship and even the sun popped out to enjoy the gathering.
As the singles commenced Tim “Bull” Wilson pulled his truck up and proceeded to assemble a portable fire pit and lit a fire of wood he said was over 20 years old. He then took 5 Dutch ovens and sat them against the fire pit to warm them up.
I looked around and Richard Drake started helping Tim put paper down in the ovens and then the crust mixture and ingredients were added next. He then started taking hot coals out of the pit and placing the coals on top of the ovens and sat the ovens on top of a bed of coals. All the deep-dish cobblers were ready about the time folks finished their meal. Somehow, I managed to partake of the strawberry and chocolate cobblers first. He had two chocolate, 1 strawberry, 1 apple and one peach deep dish cobbler and did I mention vanilla ice cream?
Big thanks to the Watauga Gun Club for the hospitality and I left for home about the time the handicap cranked up which was about 3pm. Not sure of the caps, dubs or hoa winner. There was mention of some BIG50’s so keep you eye out for the announcement.
No shoot report from Buckhorn at this time and Rockingham hosted a BIG50 Sunday. Hunter Miller won the singles, caps, dubs and HOA on a beautiful day to shoot.
Looks like NCTA President Marty Hill shot well at the Rebel Yell shoot in Alabama. Also it looks like Darin Cornett slipped down there. Check out www.shootscoreboard.com for all the info.
Ok that is about it for this week. Oh, Brushy Mountain GC and Spartanburg GC shoot this Saturday if you want to get out and register some targets. Hello to Scott, Ronnie, Cowboy, Tim, Bobby, Phil, Mac, John, Art, Barron, Mark C, Mark S, Dan, John W, Jimmy D, Thea and Anne and until next week……smokem
