June 9th Smoke Report
June 9th Smoke Report
For many years the Trap & Field magazine published the state shoot write-ups, and one little section listed the major winners. There were fewer winners to report in the old days, but your eyes were drawn to that specific info. That included the singles champ, lady, subjr, jr, doubles, handicap, HOA and HAA. Of course, there was info for the most part of all the winners but now there are more categories.
This year history will record two new names in the NC State Shoot record books. I believe I first met Caleb Mathis at an SCTP event at the Rockingham Gun Club. And as years progressed, he grew older and wiser and much more efficient on the line. All that work and support from his parents and grandparents led him to an amazing result this year. 198 in the Championship Singles and 125 straight in a shoot off with another amazing young shooter Isaac McCoy. Lone 99 in the Championship Doubles and a solid 92 in handicap. He captured the HAA with 389 and the HOA with an impressive 964x1000. According to his grandfather they will be traveling to the Maryland and Michigan state shoots and keep an eye on those two events.
The 2025 Handicap Champ is Keith Forbes with a lone 96 in-state and I really do not know a lot about him. I was helping with shoot offs and did not get a picture of him for the smoke report. I congratulated him and thanked him for representing the older generation with at least one of the major events. He also broke a 95 in handicap on Friday, so he was dialing it in. If you are planning to attend the Virginia State Shoot you will be able to pre-squad using www.scoresR.com but it has not been set up yet according to Mike Jeter. And if I am not mistaken it costs you nothing to use it.
I talked to Phil Berkowitz Monday, and he told me NC will have a new trapshooter that is moving to Bostic NC. Can you believe you’ll be able to live 12 minutes from the NC Homegrounds? He is a relatively new shooter, but it looks like he enjoys the sport and is a great shooter. His name in Ken Hoeft and I called him to discuss options for practice near him. We need all the shooters we can get.
Many of you know George Ponton and Randy Jones shared some health info. Evidently George has had a stroke and is in a facility that is taking care of him. I called him several weeks ago prior to all this happening. Our prayers are with him and his family at this time.
No shoots this weekend in NC but Brushy Mountain VA shoots Saturday. Neat place to shoot and a great background. Hello to Scott, Ronnie, Cowboy, Tim, Bobby, Phil, Mac, John, Art, Barron, Mark C, Mark S, Dan, John W, Thea and Anne and until next week……smokem
