June 23rd Smoke Report

Summertime is here and it is arriving with a heat wave. It was hot last week and three shooting events to report. Two shooting events this weekend with different weather conditions.
Saturday the Watauga Gun Club in Boone North Carolina will be hosting a 300-target match. I contacted Morgan Shaw to see if he had any info to share and he did. Evidently Morgan has been working on the PAT traps because of oscillating issues. He will be assessing the situation and make the call on whether the match will be held. As soon as he makes the call it will be posted on here and on TarHeelTrap on Facebook. The weather is looking cooler with a chance of rain for Saturday. Morgan said Keith Forbes (2025 NC State Handicap Champion) and Shawn Reese were practicing for their trip to the Kentucky State Shoot over the fourth of July weekend.
Sunday Fort Bragg will be hosting a 300 target shooting event and the weather is looking toasty with mid 90’s in the forecast. If you are reading this and have never shot at Bragg, you need to go. Great shooting facility and a great background with all-orange white flyer targets. Marty and the crew always do a great job and hopefully I will be able to post the shoot program.
The Buckhorn Gun Club hosted a BIG50 Wednesday and all I have is the winner info supplied by Chris Powell. Caleb Clayton won the singles, and the handicap and Dan Johnson won the doubles. The next BIG50 is scheduled for July 16th. Buckhorn will host a two-day match on July 5th & 6th so please mark your calendars.
The Rockingham County Gun Club hosted a 300-target event with hot temps, bright sun and minimal winds. Singles cranked up and three 98’s were posted and a lone 99 posted by Dan Johnson. It was good to see him at RCGC and hope to see him back later in the year. Handicap was won by Hunter Miller with a 94 and he gained ½ yard for his efforts and it put him on the 21. Doubles fielded 8 shooters and Dan Johnson started off a little rough with a 44 and then produced a 48 for a 92 and a win. Dan also won the HOA by one bird over VA shooter Brian Coates.
RCGC hosted a BIG50 Sunday with a small group, but some good scores were shot. Lane Murray and Mark Cox put up 49 in the singles, Lane posted the high caps score with a 45 and Mark broke a 48 in the doubles. Phil Graham broke his first 25 in singles and his hat was aerated by Hunter Miller and Mark Cox. I scored and it was hot even with an umbrella. I took a picture of my dash in the 4Runner showing 100 degrees at 4:30. RCGC will shoot next on July 19th and it will be a BIG50.
John Sandell hosted a Nora Martin Ross clinic at the Minute Man Sportsman Gun Club in Burlington Massachusetts over the weekend. It looks like they had a good number attending and John sent me a few pictures of her teaching. Her next stop is the Old Skagit Gun Club in Burlington Washington.
Dan Johnson has added another story to Tall Tales & True Stories. A very interesting read about the way shoot offs were handled when things were a little cheaper. In talking with Dan, he still has a lot of stories to write, and you never know what will come next.
Youth shooter Isaac McCoy attended the Ohio State shoot in Marengo Ohio last week. He got there on Wednesday and had his Krieghoff serviced. He had a broken screw in the forend and they replaced another piece in the receiver. He posted a 194 in the Championship Singles Saturday and respectable 95 in caps Sunday. His next big shoot is the West Virginia State Shoot at the Winchester VA Gun Club. The Ohio state shoot was up 672 shooters from 2024 but down almost 1600 shooters from 2014. More info can be found at www.rjstuart.com.
Several families will be attending the Maryland State Shoot this year including the Mathis family and the Galloways. The event will be held in Thurmont Maryland June 25 – 29 so keep an eye on www.shootscoreboard.com for all the scores. I believe the Mathis crew will head to the Michigan State Shoot that will be held in Mason Michigan July 1-6. Check out their website at www.michigantrap.com.
That will do it for this week and please stay cool if you can. Hello to Scott, Ronnie, Cowboy, Tim, Bobby, Phil, Mac, John, Art, Barron, Mark C, Mark S, Dan, John W, Thea and Anne and until next week……smokem
