December 5th Smoke Report

Post by smokem »

December is here and just a few more weeks until the fat man flies. Gifts and decorations and planning that big dinner it is a great time of the year. What is on your Christmas list a new gun, shooting vest or maybe a few flats of $15 per box shells? Regardless of what you wish for good health must be high on the list because without that it is tough to operate.

Couple of shoots last week including CCLEOA and Buckhorn shot Sunday. CCLEOA held their BIG50 Friday and Robert Poniatowski led all singles shooters with a 47. Tony Barlanti was the high caps guy with a 44 and Billy Soper led all doubles entries with a 46. CCLEOA will hold their next BIG50 the 16th of December.

Buckhorn shot Sunday and not sure who won the singles, Richard Long won the caps, Jonathan Miller won the doubles and Mark Cox won HOA. It was good to see Tyler Cox shooting again and hope to see him more often around the state. Buckhorn shoots next on January 1st, 2023, and that of course is a Sunday.

A couple of BIG50 events this week with Rockingham moving their Tuesday event to Thursday to avoid the rain and a 52-degree high temp. Watauga hosts their BIG50 Sunday the 11th with 42-degrees and a 40% chance of rain…..Just trying to get these events in without having to cancel the event.

A couple of folks to keep on your prayer list and one is Phil Berkowitz in Florida. He caught a foot and fell breaking his right hip and shoulder. That will require a hip replacement considering he broke the ball, and we wish him a speedy recovery. Mark Spoon is recovering from and encounter with a kidney stone that was ¼” in diameter. He is still on pain meds and hopes to be cleared to drive soon. Please keep the Cornett family in your prayers and I know they will appreciate it.

A big shout out to James Haskins “Harlan” Brown. He was awarded Rockingham County Gun Clubs Member of the Year Sunday. He is the 26th recipient since it started in 1999. James is always at the club workdays and volunteers for both the skeet and trap programs. His trap game has really improved after a Harlan Campbell clinic at RCGC James has got stories to tell that are hard to believe but they are all true. He was really surprised and very grateful for the honor!

The end of year list that honors the state's high average leaders was published last week. Folks are shooting less registered birds and it is a fact. Higher shells prices and entry fees are the highest they have ever been to shoot registered birds. Not sure what the future holds for 2023 and only time and targets will tell. Here are the high average leaders….

1. Jeff Galloway - 92.17%
2. David Smiley - 90.43%
3. John Miller - 89.53%
4. Joe Nalley - 87.32%
