March 14th Smoke Report

Post by smokem »

March 14th and I hope you survived the windy weekend. Couple of BIG50’s and Ft. Bragg shot Saturday in that light wind. One NC scheduled this weekend and the Southern Grand started Sunday.

The Buckhorn Gun Club shoots this Sunday the 20th and I hope you can make it down to Mebane for their monthly shoot. Always a good time and a tasty lunch with yummy desserts prepared by Karole Miller.

Rockingham County Gun Club held their first of two BIG50’s in March and it started out a little rocky. About 10:40 Duke Power pulled the plug on the club, and it came back on about 1:30. We started out with 8 and 6 stayed to shoot in overcast conditions. Mark Spoon was high gun in the singles with a 49 and Tommy Massey was high handicap with a 43. The last time Tommy shot registered trap was in 2004 and we are glad to see him back on the line. With Tommy returning to shooting his son Grant signed up with AIM/ATA and a 19 year old Jr-Gold shooter. You just never know who is going to coming out of the woodwork with a BIG50.

Ft. Bragg held their first registered shoot of 2022. Man, it was a super windy, blustery, rainy, crazy day and folks did show up to shoot. 5 shot singles with 96 posted by Caleb Mathis. Connor Mathis won the handicap with 6 shooting and a 84. Caleb also won the doubles with 4 shooting and a 91 and HOA with 96-81-91=268. Hopefully their next shoot it will be warm and dry and minimal winds.

Watauga held their BIG50 Sunday, and it was sunny but chilly with typical 5-10mph winds. Randy Boone Jones led all singles shooters with a 49 with Hunter Scott and Caleb Mathis with 48’s. Connor Mathis after his showing at Ft. Bragg led all handicap shooters with a 47 and got a ½ yard for his efforts. Hunter Scott and Al Bost were close after posting 45’s. LilD “new cut” Tollison led all doubles shooters with a 47 with Caleb Mathis 45 and Will Price 44. 48-44-45 won HOA and it was Caleb Mathis in back-to-back HOA wins at Ft. Bragg and Watauga.

The Southern Grand started Sunday and two events were on tap with singles and handicap. Pretty good turnout for a preliminary day with the high score in singles a 99 and in the handicap two 94’s. One of those 94’s was broken by Jeff Galloway and after two rounds in a shootoff he was the winner over Michigan shooter Carl Chadwell. To top it off Hunter Galloway won runner-up with a 90 so NC is on the board in Odessa. Other NC shooters are there and more will ride down this week to shoot in sunny Florida. We will try to keep up with all the NC winners along the way. Terry Roush did a little digging regarding shell house prices. Looks like AA is running $98 a flat, STS products $110 and Federal Top Guns $88. Now that is a real thin overview of all the flavors available but a basic bit of information.

Please keep Mark and Tyler Cox in your prayers. Julia Ann (Joyner) McNeely passed March 11th unexpectedly. Losing your mother and grandmother is never easy and please remember them during this time. https://www.hayworth-miller.com/obituary/julia-mcneely

Ok that is about it for this week, and it looks like the weather might get a little wet midweek. Hopefully these colds temps are a thing of the past. Hello to Scott, Ronnie, Cowboy, Tim, Bobby, Thea and Anne and until next week……………smokem
