December 27th Smoke Report

Post by smokem »

Christmas 2021 is in the books and here comes the New Year. I hope you and your family had a great holiday and are looking forward to 2022. I will have to admit the last two years have been interesting.

No shoot reports today but if you want to register some targets this coming weekend Buckhorn will host the first shoot in North Carolina the 2nd. Weather looks iffy right now with 50% percent rain and a tad windy. But weather forecasts cannot be trusted always.

Looks like some NC folks are plotting and planning to descend on the Silver Dollar Gun Club in March for the Southern Grand. I know that is ways off, but it will be here before you know it. It has been quite a few years since I attended, and it will be good to eat some Greek food on the sponge docks. Even Dave Daily and some of his PA family and friends might make the trip.

The NC Home Grounds will host 4 events in 2022 and the first will be in April with the Hall of Fame Shoot. George Sudderth will be inducted, and I will proceed to scour my pictures of BamBam starting in 2004 when I started using digital photography. Unfortunately, I might not be able to attend the event due to another event happening on that week/end. If I am not mistaken the GA State Shoot is going on that week also. I am sure the HOF will be well attended and hopefully I can slip up for the ceremony. I guess we will find out whether it will be held between the 100’s on Saturday or a banquet Saturday night. Also, we hope Old Hickory will host their BBQ dinner on Friday night. I have no confirmation on that dinner at this time.

As I have mentioned before gun clubs are planning their registered shoots for 2022. Buckhorn, Durham County, Watauga, Old Hickory, Ft. Bragg, Buccaneer and Rockingham should all be submitting requests to the ATA and the NCTA for approval. We have lost a few clubs that are still active including Gastonia and Polk County and Charlotte R&PC. It would be great if Rowan County could crank up a BIG50 program with as much activity as they generate there. As soon as dates get published, we will post links to the info.

As many of you know Joe Bouverette passed away recently and I really didn’t have a lot of info on him. He shot 21250 singles, 15625 handicap and 11200 doubles. He shot his last registered targets at the Watauga Gun Club on 10/23/2021. The ATA shows that his first registered targets were registered in 1992 but did not show where they were registered. I reached out to the folks at the Morganton Gun Club but so far, no response. It looks like he shot most of his targets in NC and 2011 was a good average year for him and he only had one year that he shot 1000 in both singles and caps. He always had a smile on his face when I was around him and he will be sorely missed. If you have any stories to share about Joe, please feel free to contact me and we will publish the info.

Ok that about it for the last smoke report of 2021. Hopefully we will have enough information to report in 2022 and I shouldn’t have a problem finding it. I hope to be shooting more after I get my eyes fixed and looking forward to that. Hello to Scott, Ronnie, Cowboy, Tim, Bobby, Thea and Anne and until next week………….smokem

December 29th, 2014

Good morning and I know that it is tough right after Christmas for a lot of folks. All of that good eating and pies and cakes and whatnot. All of the visiting and listening to your in laws and out laws tell all of those old stories that change ever so slightly year after year. All of the gifts you got that you really didn't want and all the hi-tech gifts that are in the back room with the instructions laying beside the new toy. And for those of us that go back to work and have to look at folks and say......yes I had a great Christmas how about you?

On the upside the new year is ahead of us and a good time to do things a little different or not. 2015 is only 3 days away and have you started writing down your new years resolutions? Some folks do not want to be bothered by living up to unrealistic expectations so they just wing it. To be honest that might be the best way to do it if you ask me just let it be what it will be....That 60 degree weather over the weekend was really nice and some folks think that winter is over but that is so far from the truth. January looks to be colder and wetter than January 2014 so hold onto your toboggans.

For those of you looking for registered birds you are in luck because the Buckhorn Gun Club will shoot on January the 4th. The weather is always changing and it looks like temps in the mid 50's and a chance of liquid precipitation. Then Ft. Bragg will shoot on the 10th followed by Gastonia on the 17 with Low Country Preserve shooting the 24th. LCP also shoots BIG50 events on the 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th of January.

For those of you wanting to shoot and enjoy warmer temperatures the Dixie Grand just might be the shoot for you. January 19th - 25th the Dixie Grand will be held at the Silver Dollar Trap Club in Odessa Florida. 645 miles from Jamestown NC which equates to 10 hours of continuous driving with no stops. Some folks like to shoot at the Silver Dollar and there are two sides to the club. One is the golf side and you shoot looking at folks playing golf right in front of where you are shooting. The gun club side looks out over a pasture and I have seen everything from big birds and cows grazing to deer scampering around. They throw some great targets and most of the refs live down there year round and do a great job. One of the refs never wears shoes and he is definitely in need of a pedicure if you know what I mean. Bob Schultz and his band of merry men will be in attendance and I am sure the Galloway's and Bill Howe will make the trip.

I slipped over to trapshooters.com to take a look and I must admit I very rarely ever go to that site anymore. The old format was much more user friendly for me and the new setup just doesn't do it for me. Evidently the fellow that took it over is in the money making business from what the naysayers are reporting. I haven't made a post on the forum in months but I might crank up a NC Shoots thread for folks that might be visiting our state.

That is about it and I hope everybody has a great week and a safe New Years Eve.......Back in the day my grannie used to make biscuit dough pizza's and we could add anything we wanted to the pizza. She also bought ginger ale and she said it was kids champagne and we would bring in the new year......those were the days. Hello to Hap, Scott and Lou and until next week..........................................Smokem 2015

December 28th SMoke Report
Post by smokem » Sun Dec 27, 2015 11:37 pm

Good morning and this is the last smoke report of 2015. Time sure flies when you are having fun and hard to believe Christmas is over. I hope you and your family had a great time with friends and family. I had a great time with family and gifted two new Daisy bb/pellet guns to a couple of our X daycare children. One is big enough for a youth model 12 gauge bt-99....

LCP postponed their BIG50 last week due to Christmas plans but they did have info on their shoot two Saturday's ago. The following info was posted by Pat Childers: No Big 50 this week due to Christmas travels, parties, etc. However, we had an excellent turn out for the December Monthly Trap Shoot on last Saturday. We had 10 shooters compete for the high score and Mike Petrone was the winner with a score of 85. Wayne Averill was second and Pat Childers finished third. Mike Anselmo, Larry Dudley and Will Dovel made the trip from Southport to shoot with us. Also Tim Howard, Frank Harris, Terry Lewis and Mike Ciccarella all shot with us. Thanks to all and hope to see you all next month on Saturday, January 16, 2016.

Jimmy Wilson called and needs your help. Mother nature sent a fireball through his cable modem and wiped out his pc and printer. That means he lost his distribution list that he uses to spork out his email to announce his monthly shoots. I posted the shoot for this Sunday the third on TarHeelTrap and will post on Trapshooters.com. If you have an address list (Marty Hill or Mac Herring) please cut and paste the shoot info and send that to your list if possible.

Not sure if LCP is shooting this Wednesday the 30th for their BIG50 but I do know their monthly shoot will be the 16th according to their newsletter. The shoot calendar is looking a little puny and hopefully Rockingham will be posting their 2016 schedule right after the 1st...I have included the hot link to the state calendar for your convenience. Mash on the following link - http://nctrap.com/shoots2015.pdf

I got out to the Rock Saturday and wound up helping folks get setup to shoot and loaned out my three ERAD devices. Great to see folks enjoying trapshooting even in low light and misty dreary almost rainy conditions. The gentleman that owns Clinton press in Greensboro had his family out for a meal and some lead hurling. I did run into retired GPD bike cop Bruce Smith at the Rock and he is sure happy to be retired. He shot the 870 pretty good at trap considering he is used to shooting anywhere from 17 to 30 rounds in a hurry.

Tom Pitts is already ciphering up the State shoot points and I have included the link for your convenience - http://nctrap.com/shoots2015.pdf Tom does a great job and thanks to him for all of his efforts.

Chris Shoulars is back in Reidsville and is working at a hardware store selling guns along with his father Scott. All kinds of guns are being sold thanks to the current dirt stirrer in Washington. I believe the hardware store is called Saunders True Value hardware and is located at 202 Piedmont Street in Reidsville so please check it out.

Word off the mountain is that everybody is laying low with Tom Shelley and his galpal biking and hiking and Shelley is down 15 pounds. Tom Shelley has tried to get Pitts out biking but Pitts says he is afraid his gravy will burn. BamBam and Tom Pitts are doing indoor trapshooting practice with the Terry Jordan wall chart. They take turns calling lost targets for each other. Morg sent me a bunch of pictures and video from the Toys For Tots that I will try to get posted some time or another.

Not sure what to say about the weather other than it is not cold outside! Grass looks good and I have had 4 large spiders try to get past me here in the easy chair. These dudes are as big as a 50 cent piece. I am sure we are going to get hammered in the next few months and I am looking forward to it. HighCountryWebcams.com has a ton of cams from the coast and the mountains of NC-VA-WVA and it is neat to watch it snow.....

2016 is upon us and I know that everybody is making those new years resolutions. It is a fun time of the year to change things or just let them remain the same. I will continue to do the smoke report for another year and if you know of someone having a birthday or even have some dirt to dish please email me at freddydacrusher@hotmail.com

I hope everyone has a great week and a Happy New Year. Hello to Hap, Scott, Lou and Chase and until next year.....................Smokem
