Caps Shoot Off at RCGC

Post by Rooster »

I'm not sure about the year, but it was when Doc Spencer, Elmo Matkins and Jim Bray were still shooting.
This was when Roger Shaffer put on the shoots at Rockinghan County working out of the shed up on the hill.
I was shooting caps pretty good back then and was down 5 going into the last box. I started out on post 2 with Elmo leading
our squad. Elmo was breaking 5's right along until the last post. Elmo led off the last post and the scorer hollered lost and I shot.
Next bird the same result. He missed the first four birds on the last post and finally broke the last bird for a "One". As we were leaving the field I heard " Damn I miscounted". As it turns out Doc, Elmo, Jim and I were tied for high gun with 93's.
Doc, Jim and I shot off for the champion and I'm not sure who won. Elmo saved his ammo. The only thing I won was a punch.
Lost the High Gun and yardage group and wasted a box of shells. Guess I should have counted better myself.
I think I heard Elmo say that you shouldn't earn a yard for less than $1000, but I could be wrong on the amount.
