August is halfway over, and the kids are headed back to school. Hurricane Erin is churning in the Atlantic and for those of us that were in Bostic when Helene hit, I would say go far away.

One shoot over the weekend at the Durham County Wildlife Club. Scarlett Su provided me with the shoot score info and here it is. Isaac McCoy was hi-gun in the singles with the lone 99. Eric Blakeney got a ½ yard punch for his 94 to the 24.5 and won the HOA with a 282. Joe Nalley was top-gun in the doubles with a 96.

Two shooting events including a two-day shoot at the Watauga Gun Club and Ft. Bragg shoots Saturday. Morgan Shaw reported that three traps are ready for the Glenn and hopefully the weather will cooperate with forecasts of the possibility of liquid precip both days. The Saturday program is 100 handicaps and 100 pairs of doubles. 200 singles on Sunday with a start time after noon. Lunch will be available, and Morgan will be posting the information on Facebook.

Saturday Ft. Bragg will host a typical 300 target program. Weather looks good with temps in the mid 80’s and only a 20% chance of rain. I have not seen a program, but no lunch will be available from what I remember. Always have a good time in the sandhills and if you have never shot there here is your chance.

I gave George Sudderth a call over the weekend to get caught up to date on all the happenings in the hills. He mentioned that he was reading Trap & Field and skimmed through the obituary section and noticed that TN shooter Fred Rutherford had passed. There was no lengthy obit because it was evidently too late to publish it in it’s entirety.

I googled and found the obit info and posted the link in “Finished Careers” on this site. I knew he traveled and shot with Tim Dean and Steve Hensley, but I did not have their numbers. I contacted Morgan Shaw to see if he had their numbers and he did not. I asked Morg to see if he was Facebook friends with Tim and the next thing I know is my phone is ringing.

Tim Dean is house sitting for a friend in Amelia Island Florida and he begins to give me some info about Fred Rutherford’s passing. Tim said that they frequented a local gym together and the last conversation he had with Fred was a good one. Fred said he had found a good Church he was attending, and his health was good and he was still dating his long-time girlfriend, Jenny. Tim said Fred would cook for the congregation on Wednesday nights and he always looked forward to feeding the flock. He was at Church cooking and experienced a cardiac event and could not be revived. After Fred stopped shooting, he started bass fishing and was always posting pictures from the lake. Several years ago, he sent me all his shooting accessories after Tim sold his K80 on trapshooters.com. I have been giving out different items to new youth shooters to save them a few dollars. Fred was a good shooter and a great competitor and wanted to shoot good scores. He will sorely be missed and gone too soon.

I looked at the Cardinal Classic shoot and noticed only 1 NC competitor and that was David Smiley. You can go to www.rjstuart.com for all the score info and demographics. It looks like attendance was down a bit and I’m not sure what is up with that. I have never attended a shoot at the Cardinal and maybe 2026?

Dan Johnson posted last week and somehow, I missed it. Take a look at his latest offering and he will post something to look forward to next week. Dan has a trip planned to PA in the very near future to shoot at one of his favorite clubs. I imagine he will have a few stories to share from that shooting adventure.

That is going to do it for this week. Been working pretty hard at the daycare this summer with a few returning youngins that will be going back to school. Also working at the Sheriffs Office at night and that is always fun. Hello to Scott, Ronnie, Cowboy, Tim, Bobby, Phil, Mac, John, Art, Barron, Mark C, Mark S, Dan, John W in AL, Thea and Anne and until next week……smokem
