October 10th Smoke Report

Post by smokem »

Another great weather weekend in North Carolina. Folks were shooting North and South of us but only one shooting event last week. Several this week including CCLEOA BIG50 Friday, Rockingham National Trapshooting Month shoot Saturday and Rockingham BIG50 Sunday @2PM.

We had a good group shoot Tuesday and Doug Monjeau outbested everyone with a combined score of 93. Paul Garrett formerly from WVA and living in Charlotte visited us and won the HOA but did not qualify for NC State points. He also had the high score in doubles with a 46 in some windy conditions. The next Tuesday BIG50 will be the 18th. November and December dates will be moved to 10 or 11 depending on weather.

Craven County Law Enforcement Officers Association will shoot this Friday and they are attracting a squad or more for their events. Glad to see them registering birds in the Eastern part of the state. Rockingham will host the NTM Saturday, and we will be distributing pins supplied from the ATA but will not have the leather Shamrock trophies we offered a few years ago. Orders had to be placed at a specific date and at the time we didn’t know if the last three traps would be ready for use by the 15th. Also, RCGC will host a BIG50 Sunday at 2PM. Registration starts at 1 and shooting begins at 2.

Some might have seen the pictures of the trap renovation that was just recently completed at the Rockingham County Gun Club. As published before all 6 traps had drainage systems installed, retaining walls, concrete steps, new entry doors, new front doors and stainless-steel roof systems and of course a new green paint job with matte black roofs. An elevated berm was created in front of each house and originally there were two railroad ties placed in front of each house. We discovered that the ERAD systems were not working properly due to the combination of the dirt and railroad ties. Sunday the top railroad tie was removed, and all traps were tested for ERAD sensitivity. The shoot this weekend will be a good test of the removal of the top tie. Next on the list is the resurfacing of all the concrete pads and the demo and rebuild of the old trap building. We will try to get some pictures along the way.

Looking ahead to next week RCGC BIG50 18th, Ft. Bragg and Buccaneer BIG50’s the 22nd and Watauga typical 300 target program the 22nd. This is a good chance to get in some birds before the weather sets in for the winter. Up North they shoot leagues all through the winter. In PA some guys and gals shoot at night two or three times a week.

News from Georgia is that trapshooter Earnest Manns passed away. He was a fixture at Tom Lowe and a member of the Tuesday night and Sunday trap league. He was a mentor to many and sported a red and black BT-99 that stood out in any gun rack. Life is so short, and you really have no idea when it is your time to go. It would be great if you have a senior trapshooting friend to take a moment and video them talking about the good old days and what led them to the sport, we all love. You think folks will be here forever and then they are gone.

Ok folks that is about it and it looks like the weather will be nice this week. Cooler temps and less humidity is always great especially when shooting. Hello to Scott, Ronnie, Cowboy, Tim, Bobby, Thea and Anne and until next week……..smokem
