April 18th Smoke Report

Post by smokem »

I certainly hope everyone had a great Easter Holiday and looking forward to the iffy weather week. Monday looks a little wet and cool and the weather for the NCHOF looks marvelous.

Not a whole lot of shooting last week but Rockingham held their BIG50 Thursday, and 10 folks showed up to participate. Mark Spoon broke a 49 to take the singles and James Haskins “Harlan” Brown broke a 47 in the caps. James won the overall score total with a 91. Cotes Courts registered his first ATA targets and was very excited to do so. Mark your calendars for the 28th and the next BIG50 at RCGC.

The NC Hall of Fame starts Thursday and Marty Hill has been classifying shooters to save time when signing up. You might still have a shot at getting classified before the shoot and Marty is heading up Wednesday to the Homegrounds.

As I have mentioned in previous reports George Sudderth is being inducted and here is the writeup for his induction. This will appear in the handout that is given at every HOF banquet.

George M. Sudderth III was born August 31, 1953, in Blowing Rock N.C. where he is a lifelong resident. George is married to Evalyn Cantrell Sudderth. George and Evalyn have been married for 45 years, and they have two children; Rev. Natasha Sudderth and PSO Officer George {Chip} Sudderth IV and six grandchildren.

George’s career spanned 32 years from the Town of Blowing Rock and Appalachian State University to the Town of Boone. George retired from the Town of Boone in 2003 after serving for 17 years as Director of Public Utilities. George also served Blowing Rock and Boone as a volunteer firefighter, including 5 years as Fire Chief of Blowing Rock. He also served as a fire service instructor for 15 years for both the N.C. Department of Community Colleges and the N.C. Department of Insurance. Along with two other instructors, George became the first certified live burn specialist in North Carolina.

George was first introduced to trapshooting in 1981, while visiting the Watauga Gun Club as the guest of a coworker who took him out to sight in his hunting rifle. On this initial visit, the club members were setting up for their weekly team trapshoot. He was given a box of shells and a Remington 1100 Trap gun and told to see how many he could break. George broke 22 out of 25 and he was hooked on the sport, but it would be 13 years before he shot trap again. George joined the Watauga Gun Club in June 1994, and it didn’t take much arm twisting to get him involved in the trap program. George joined the ATA and registered his first targets in August 1994 at the Watauga Gun Club.

In 27 years (and counting) of trapshooting, George has won 5 North Carolina state championships and 3 non-resident state championships in South Carolina. George also won the Class AAA title at the 2004 Southern Zone. He has 8 class championships in North Carolina: 3 class High All Arounds, 2 runner-up championships and 27 significant class or category trophies. George also earned a spot on the North Carolina Team which won the 2011 Southern Zone Team trophy in the Singles Championship. He is a six-time member of the North Carolina high average team and five-time member of the North Carolina points team. He achieved AA27AA status in 2004.

George served on the NCTA board of directors from 1996 until 2004 and he was NCTA vice president from 2000 to 2004. Good luck to George and I wish I could have been there to celebrate.

Ok that is about it for this week, but I heard that Buckhorn might be hosting BIG50 shoots on the 1st and third Wednesday’s and as soon as those dates are confirmed we will post the information. Hello to Scott, Ronnie, Cowboy, Tim, Bobby, Thea and Anne and until next time…………………………….smokem
