January 4th Smoke Report

Post by smokem »

Happy New Year and here we go into 2021. Hopefully, it will be better than 2020 and we will have to see how it goes. One good thing is that folks are shooting again, and Spartanburg and Buckhorn had shoots over the weekend.

January is a little thin with registered shoots, but Watauga will host BIG50’s the 10th and 24th of January. Hopefully, the calendar will start to fill up real soon. If you need targets and the weather looks good, look for registered shoots in Virginia or South Carolina.

I did find shotgun shells last week and they were at Mace Sports in Mebane NC. Federal flats at 64+/- and Nitros packed 200 to a flat for $66. They had about 30 flats of Federals and ¼ flat of the Nitro’s. Steve Watson said Cabela’s has Federal for 64.99 and Gun Clubs for $79 a flat and in stock. Free shipping for orders over $50. I will be checking Academy Sports and Sportsman Warehouse this week.

Buckhorn shot Sunday and here is the writeup Eric Sherer posted on Facebook - Buckhorn Gun Club was pleased to host our first shoot of 2021 today. We shot all four of our trap fields (or perhaps swamps with trap throwers in them) due to a remarkable turnout for a chilly and wet day. We appreciate all of the shooters who came out.

Many thanks to the people who made this event happen today. Richard Drake, Gary Wagoner, Doug Horner, Marty Hill, Curtis Odem, and Taylor Horner all scored the events. John Miller, Tim Crabtree, Curtis Odem, and Eric Sherer loaded targets. Chuck and Auman Woody managed the desk and computer as they always do, and Jim Wilson ran the show. Most importantly, Geri Wilson presided over lunch.

We had 38 singles shooters, 28 in handicap, and 29 for doubles bringing the total number of targets to 9,500 thrown. Caleb Mathis won singles, Trevor Fleck won both handicap and doubles. Our HOA shooter was Trevor Fleck with 272/300. Congratulations to our high-gun shooters.

We were thrilled to have Lynn Ward bring FOUR first time shooters from Mid Carolina Clay Busters to Buckhorn today. It has been a great pleasure watching this group come from picking up a shotgun for the first time to their first competition today. We sincerely hope that they will return to shoot with us again. Welcome to the obsession we call trap shooting.

Spartanburg shot Saturday the 2nd and it looks like it was well attended. 36 registered for singles and do not have all details on the caps (28) or doubles. Looks like NC was well represented with 14 in the singles event. Looks like South Carolina shooter Kevin Stephens won the singles with a 99 and Luke Barker won the caps with a 92. New shooter Tim Davis won the short yardage with a solid 86 and only 6 off the top score. Caleb Mathis won the doubles and the HOA according to his grandfather..

Ok sports fans it looks like a chance of some snow Friday and that remains to be seen or shoveled. It is January and I believe we only got 2 inches in our area in 2020. I like a little snow once in awhile as long as it isn’t a foot of it. A big shout out to Lou, Scott, Ronnie, Cowboy, Thea and Anne and until next week……………….smokem
