I guess you roll the dice when you plan a shoot in early February. The concept of this event started with Jeff Allen planning to take his group out of state to introduce them to registered trapshooting. I suggested that maybe we could host the guys and gals to keep the event in the state and to also familiarize them with the club they would shoot at in April.

We kept an eye on the weather and all we knew was cold and sunny with a bit of wind. The weather was exactly what they said, and the kids just kept coming. We didn’t start exactly on time and we did the best we could to keep things running smooth all day. I am not sure of the actual total number of shooters and their families present but it had to be around 50 people.

The club does the best they can to provide a safe, clean, fun environment for folks to shoot and make memories. It can be an exact science, but things always seem to happen, and I guess you just mark it up to experience. We had a great turnout of Rock members to ref, load, pickup hulls, feed lunch and run the computer. It was a litmus test to prepare for the SCTP State Championship in April and I know we will be better prepared for that event.

The day started out cold at about 19 and finally warmed up into the 40’s. There were times when the wind was still but very rarely. We had 15 or more brand new ATA shooters on the line and all of them were very courteous and safety conscious.

36 singles – 18 handicap – 20 doubles shooters participated Saturday and everybody had a great time all day. Morg Shaw led all singles shooters with a 94, Luke Mayo got a ½ yard punch for his 89 and Brian Kellner led all doubles shooters with his 89.

The info below was submitted by Jeff Allen and Morg Shaw and we appreciate their kind words regarding our hosting the event. This was a great success and heck it even might be a yearly scheduled event for the youth shooters in North Carolina. I have included a link to the pictures that I took, and that Morg Shaw submitted. I hope to get some more pictures that were taken by a teacher that was supporting her students.

From Jeff Allen.....

The incredible Rockingham County Gun Club members played host to the 1st Annual Youth ATA registered shoot on Saturday February 3. Young men and women trap shooters from 4th grade thru college gathered at “THE ROCK” to participate in this first ever inaugural event. Various NC youth clay target teams were in attendance from Watauga to East Davidson High School as well as individual youth shooters from across the state. Excitement filled the air with nearly 40 youth trap shooters participating, 16 of which were brand new ATA members participating in their first ever registered event.
Attending shooters, parents, school teachers and coaches were graciously welcomed by club members of RCGC into America’s greatest clay target sport of ATA Trapshooting.
Dressed to withstand the grueling temperatures which hovered in the low 20’s to start the day, NC youth shooters boldly took the trap line. Despite the cold temps shooters worked their way to crush 100 16-yard singles to claim the Sub-Jr and Jr. Trophies. Followed by 100 Handicap and a 50 pair Doubles events.
The RCGC member’s overwhelming hospitality was evident as they served everyone’s favorite pizzas, soft drinks, coffee, donuts and snacks to shooters and guests throughout the day.
After the clay target dust cleared in the grueling cold temps both the Junior Singles & Jr. Handicap events were won by Luke Mayo of Carolina Clays. Brian Kellner and Jeff Eldereth of Watauga dominated the Sub Jr. Events while teammates Gracie Reavis won Jr. High Lady and Jr. Single’s runner up and Jacob Beauchamp wins the Jr. Doubles event. Shooting her new Remington, Abby Lewis of East Davidson High School took the Jr. Lady Singles Runner Up.
Shooters and parents learned the importance of academics, integrity and marksmanship as they strive to win big not only in our great sport of trap shooting but also in the many scholarship opportunities offered through ATA, AIM and National Shooting Sports Foundation Programs.
