Glenn 2005
Great weather weekend somewhere in America. Hot and humid with heavy downpours and vivid cloud to ground lightning……August is about halfway over and come on cooler weather. One trapshooting event over the weekend and the Glenn at Watauga is this weekend.
Ft. Bragg shot Sunday and hopefully I will get some score info before I finish this smoke report. With no access to Facebook (don’t miss it believe me) I don’t get the shoot reports immediately. But eventually I do get them.
Watauga shoots this weekend and according to the Morgan Shaw the Saturday program consists of 200 singles and 100 caps with Sunday featuring 150 pairs of doubles. Always a good time honoring Glenn Miller at the Watauga Gun Club. My grandfather used to pal around with Mr. Miller, and they might have shared a pint or two. Weather looks iffy Saturday and Sunday looks better with temps in the mid 70’s and you can’t beat that.
Phil Berkowitz is spending a month in the NC mountains, and he has made it to Watauga for practice twice. He will be attending the Glenn this weekend so take a moment and say hello. He lives in the Villages in Florida and really misses shooting trap in North Carolina.
Marty was nice enough to give me a quick rundown of the Ft. Bragg shoot. Bryce Smoldon won the singles with a 96, Jeff Brown handicap with a 95 and Allan Davis doubles with an 89. 16 shooters participated and it was hot and humid. Looks like that is the last shoot on the calendar but you never know that might change.
The end of the target year is upon us and be sure to renew your ATA membership before appearing at a trap shoot in September. The ATA life membership could be an option and might save you in the long run. If you are working on someone to start shooting registered trap the ATA offers free first time memberships that clubs can issue.
October 6-11, 2026 the Dixie Grand will be here before you know it. SOS Clays is accepting pre-squadding, and it looks like they have 84 squad’s setup for the singles on Saturday. Unlike state shoot championship weekend formats, the championship doubles are shot on Friday and only handicap is shot on Sunday. I bit the bullet and paid for the SOS app on my phone and so far, it has come in handy in some cases. I prefer the original pre-squad.com to SOS clays pre-squad and that is a fact. Looking at the 2025 Dixie singles attendance on the SOSCLays website, 299 shooters entered with Mark Cox with the lone 199. The Tuesday singles is named after Mark and that is quite an honor.
That is going to do it for this week folks. At least this report is on time and not late like last week. Keep Tom Brown in your prayers after the VA docs found some questionable spots on his body. They poked and prodded and cut and stitched and he can’t lift anything over ten pounds.

I almost forgot to mention that Tammie Wilkins let me know Russ Adams passed away on August 10th. Russ was a key figure in SC trapshooting and won numerous SC State titles that are listed in the obituary. He achieved the grand slam and was the 187th to do so. He was a proud mason and a military veteran. He wore a distinctive loose fitting camo shirt and drove a Humvee if I am not mistaken. It will take a bit of time, but I will dig up some pix of Russ and share. Here is the link to his obituary. He is gone but he will never be forgotten. https://www.floydmortuary.com/obituaries/russell-adams
